It has\nentered the vicious cycle.  This means\nthat no matter what drug is developed, whether or not effective or toxic, the\ndrug makers will charge whatever they want and can get away with it, because\nfew people are aware of it, even scientists who have created it.  If the drug has enough serious side effects,\na new disease will be created which, in turn, needs more new drugs to treat,\naffording Big Pharma perpetual income.  There\nis plenty of incentive for greedy parties to maintain its status quo<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

           Just check out the new drug,\nValbenazine (Ingrezza), approved in April 2017 for treating the new drug-caused\ndisease, Tardive Dyskinesia (TD), in people who have taken common drugs for\nmental and gastrointestinal problems.  In\nthe USA alone, there are 500,000 citizens suffering from this new disease, each\npaying $200-$400 per day.  This would\namount to roughly $37 billion to $73 billion per year to add to our national\nhealthcare costs, a big chunk of which would go to the insurance and healthcare\ncompanies.  And this is only one drug!  Is this the kind of healthcare you want for\nyour grandchildren and theirs?  Most\npeople have never heard of this.  But it\nis quietly eliminating alternative therapies (at least trying) so that only new\ntoxic synthetic drugs are produced and approved in an endless stream of drugs\nto feed the vicious cycle.  Before\nValbenazine was approved for treating TD, I had thought that Big Pharma and\nassociates might not know that drug therapy was heading towards its current\nunnatural state.  And when they finally came\nto realize that the new drug was to treat a disease caused by taking \u2018common\u2019\neveryday medicines widely promoted and easily made available to the general\npublic, they would understand the serious implications and would start to try\nto reassess their situation and perhaps reset their thinking and do right by\nthe vast majority of other citizens.  But\nno.  It has been 2 years now.  Nothing seems to have been done to take\nadvantage of age-old clinical experiences. \nWe are still doing the same so-called evidence-based science \u2013 from\ntesting in test tubes to cells and small animals and then in humans for a\nmeasly few decades and consider the new synthetic drug safe.  But is it? \n  All I know is this vicious cycle\nhas added another gold mine to its owners\u2019 coffers, and simultaneously\nincreasing our healthcare costs by tens of billions.   I think Big Pharma & Co. may even be\nquietly celebrating this in glee for over 2 years.  That suggests to me that they never had the\nhealth and financial wellbeing of other human beings in mind.  It is greed! \nIf one even had half a conscience, one would never try to exploit\nothers\u2019 ill health, especially that of the less fortunate, and profit from it.  Most of us are supposed to have religious or\nfamily values.  What happened?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

           In\nearlier posts, I thought that most scientists would expect the occurrence of\nthis vicious cycle sooner or later.   To me, it was only about 16 years ago.  Not soon enough, when compared to the length\nof my career.   This is because the drug technologies in which\nwe are trained prompt us to just do our own tiny part(s) of the whole picture,\ntotally ignoring, or unaware of, the fact that when a new drug enters our\nextremely well organized and functioning body containing billions of chemicals\nand cells, it meets apparent \u2018organized\u2019 chaos and causes more chaos.  It will take our body much more than a few\ndecades to get used to the brand-new drug before allowing it to deliver its\ntrue benefits, if any.   And it takes\ntime! This was what happened to our foods and traditional medicines eons ago\nwhen our ancestors tried them and found them safe and beneficial only\nafter many of them, through generations, were probably poisoned, became ill and\nrecovered, or died; then we have inherited this knowledge from them.  As intelligent human beings, we should be\nable to make this connection and reconsider our current no-win situation,\nunless some of us are blinded by greed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
