Bypassing the Vicious Cycle! Part 2 Simultaneously breaking it, pending the resolution of the 2 uncontrollable elements – complex body & time

After 80 plus years of monopolizing a major part of our healthcare, our synthetic drug-therapy has not worked out as expected or hoped. The drug part is scientific with all the elegance of chemical synthesis, separation, and purification techniques, along with in vitro and in vivo testing. But once this drug enters our body, it is simply trial and error, no more scientific than any herbal medicine that had gone through the same trial-and-error process, except umpteen years earlier.

I believe the major problem that has prevented drug-therapy from making any breakthroughs in cancer, heart disease or other diseases is our failure to address the fundamental issue of our complex body and the time it would take it to accept a totally brand-new synthetic chemical it has never met during its eons of existence as a part of our human species. We must address this problem before any continuing efforts in drug therapy can be successful. For those colleagues and friends who want to know more about synthetic versus natural chemicals in the drug-therapy process so as to understand how this works, it is discussed throughout my books and my posts on my blog, especially regarding the impurities of these synthetic chemicals which are mostly (if not all) brand-new chemicals with totally unknown properties. If this issue is not satisfactorily addressed, we would be doing the same scientific research for another 50 years and still be in the VC, with drug companies continuing to make whatever profits they want and we are still walking around with all these toxic chemicals in our body causing chaos, leading to illnesses.

Basically, we still haven’t broken through the constrain of time nor simplified our infinitely complex body into manageable entities (molecular, cellular, etc.) that would accept brand-new, potentially highly toxic chemicals from petrochemicals or those derived therefrom during synthesis.  At the present, the brand-new drug and one or more of its equally brand-new (and potentially highly toxic) chemicals present as impurities that are not totally removed during purification, may be rejected by our body’s resident chemicals, cells, or tissues. Or we can develop the technology of tagging each drug molecule with a homing device to avoid bumping into them so that the drug molecule can go directly to its targeted molecule or cell to neutralize the problem. Even so, we still have the basic issue of the uncontrollable time to overcome.

Despite the fact we now know most of the molecular and cellular details of our body and their interactions, often with great precision, we don’t know how to put all these advanced scientific achievements and know-how to make us healthy. I have my thoughts on these, and I think self-interest, national interest, greed, and the 2 uncontrollable elements of time and our complex body in the drug-therapy process all seem to play a role in such endeavors.

I think the reason we were able to land 2 astronauts (Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin) on the moon in 1969, less than a decade after President John F. Kennedy declared in 1961 that we would send humans there, is because it was a government project and we had our patriotic and proud country behind it. On the other hand, after President Nixon declared war on cancer in 1971, we are now close to 2020, almost half-a-century later or 6 times longer than what it had taken us to put someone on the moon, we still have no clue when cancer can be even reduced in incidence and type. Instead, cancer chemotherapy is now part of the VC. Which means, like all synthetic drugs in it, they can be highly toxic and cause more cancers than it ‘eliminates’ (if such a concept is feasible). Unlike the moon-landing project, this drug-therapy endeavor is more driven by personal greed and anticipations of large profits than by patriotism or national pride. Furthermore, in drug-therapy, there are the 2 uncontrollable elements (time & body) that we didn’t have to deal with in the space-travel project. There also doesn’t seem to a clear goal with a roadmap to achieve it, just a vague idea of ‘health.’ Now that the VC has firmly established itself, what incentives do drug makers have to set the goal or define one? Since continuing whatever they have already been doing has fulfilled any money-worshipper’s dream, i.e., perpetual big financial returns whether or not the products they produce work for anyone. If their drugs don’t work and are toxic enough to produce more diseases as side benefits for their current VC, so much more money for them. It has nothing beneficial for any of us who are not part owners of this VC or for those who have chosen to be outside it. Only Big Pharma and their associates gain.

The way I see it, the only way to break the VC is to publicize it so that the general public would know about its potential harm to our future generations and take action before it would land in their lap in a couple of decades. Hopefully, enough of you younger folks out there will help me help you start breaking this VC while at the same time bypassing it in an alternative parallel path.

This would require us to use future technologies that we can’t even visualize with our current scientific mind. It is also possible that the appropriate technology is already around the corner in an area totally outside our life sciences field. It just needs some outside-of-the-box thinkers to recognize it, be they scientists or laymen.   It probably will have little or nothing to do with our current chemical or biological technologies. The technologies would probably be far-out, metaphysical, magnetic, or whatever that we, as chemists, microbiologists, or herbalists, cannot visualize at the present. They can somehow cross the time barrier or allow our future generations to put homing devices on our drugs which would allow them to bypass all other resident molecules in our body to directly reach their end targets, without bumping into them to cause havoc, and to resolve the problem. But the process still is constrained by time.  Hopefully this would not take another 50 years, because by then our human species could probably start to mutate into freaks, after so many more decades being continually bombarded by these toxic synthetic drugs in the VC, with all the incentives for its owners not to change anything, unless forced to. Who would? When you had finally created a ‘fountain of gold’ that is self-sustaining!

For my part, my expertise is in the identity, quality, and the manufacture of commercial herbal products, as well as the potential biotech production of useful natural chemicals such as psilocybin and its analogs (baeocystin & norbaeocystin, monomethyl- and demethyl-analogs of psilocybin). As a graduate student at Michigan, I had the pleasure to name both analogs after isolating them from the mycelium of a hallucinogenic mushroom, Psilocybe baeocystis, from our Pacific Northwest, grown in a home-made fermentor. As I have explained in my books and online posts, even 2 identical chemicals can be different in their pharmacological properties, depending on their purity – 100.00%, 98.00%, or 95.00%. The amount of impurities can make a lot of difference in a drug. If it is synthetic, its impurities are unknown and can be toxic because they are brand-new to our planet and our body has had no prior contact with them. On the other hand, whatever impurities a natural chemical has, after being isolated from a plant material, were already existing in nature together with this chemical; they are not something brand-new coming from nowhere. If you think you can have a chemical like psilocybin or cannabidiol (CBD) synthesized and expect either to be the same chemical, think again. Their impurities may make a big difference depending on whether they are natural (isolated from nature) or synthetic (produced from petrochemicals or other potential toxic chemicals). If produced by biotech, the fungus or other plant materials are simply grown in a controlled nutrients environment, changing their nature and amount until the desired chemicals are induced to produce their maximal yield. Then we harvest the plant tissue (mycelium for mushroom) and isolate from it the target chemicals. Whatever impurities still remaining in the purified chemicals, normally 2%, 5%, or even up to 20%, are from the plant material, none is totally unknown and brand-new to us like those in a synthetic drug.

For another example of a natural chemical, levodopa, useful in treating a rather common disease nowadays, Parkinson’s disease (I think it’s often drug induced), see “Chapter 4: Adulthood in America” of “My Life & Rollercoaster Career” pp. 94-97. The section, titled “Levodopa extraction as example of thinking outside the box” describes how I developed a very simple process for extracting levodopa (>90% purity) over a period of only a few weeks. I hope someone has been using it for levodopa or at least its rationale for other natural chemicals.

I’ll do my little part in trying to improve the identity and quality of herb supplements currently on the market, while simultaneously trying to afford consumers true and good-quality herbal supplements at affordable prices, preferably from consumer-funded manufacturers. I don’t expect to live to see this situation in the herbal industry totally changed or the vicious cycle broken. But I am hopeful I can help build the foundation for my millennial colleagues and friends to carry on and to pass down to their next generations. With the hemp and CBD industry now so hyped up, it reminds me of the herbal supplements industry at its beginning around 25 years ago. Since then, the key scientists in government, industry, and academia have taken the lead in using faux science on herbs, analyzing herbal supplements as if they were drugs and expect them to meet drug standards. Now, all these years later, we still have no reasonable standards for herbal supplements. As I have described this repeatedly in my books and posts online (including my article “A Disruptive Concept…” mentioned above, two ‘herbal supplements’ from different companies, with the exact same herbal ingredients on their labels, can be drastically different. [See Chapters 9, 11, & 12 of my book, “My Life & Rollercoaster Career”] This shouldn’t be. But it is the fact.

With CBD products, I am afraid it may be the same. I hope my millennial colleagues and those even younger won’t follow the example of us old farts (pardon my French!) many of us, no matter how politically and socially connected, hence famous, don’t seem to get it straight all these years, confusing herbs with drugs, making it easy for the bad apples to cheat and profit from the confusion. As an advocate of traditional Chinese herbs, it saddens me to see even the United States Pharmacopeia and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia had set recent standards of traditional Chinese medicines based on some arbitrary chemicals as the standard and not on traditional attributes resulting from processing through traditional methods practiced over millennia. A typical example is cured fo-ti (zhiheshouwu or cured Polygonum multiflorum root), a well-known Chinese antiaging tonic. The chemical, a close relative of resveratrol (a strong antioxidant) is called tetrahydroxystilbene. It may have antioxidant properties, but has never been shown to be antiaging. This is discussed in the Introduction of my book mentioned earlier.

Once, when I was actively involved in the ‘modernization’ of Chinese medicine among mostly commercial, profit-oriented Chinese colleagues about 20 years ago, I asked a top executive of the USP why they only used ginsenosides as standards for ginseng (Chinese & American), his answer was “market pressure.” Since then, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia also yielded to the same market pressure. I believe the new standards for cured fo-ti in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2005 was the result of this mentality. And the herbal suppliers’ market carries some highly purified ‘herbal’ extracts containing high concentrations of such chemicals (e.g., 98% resveratrol) for use in ‘herbal’ products standardized to these chemicals, which contain little or no herbal elements. Now, it seems I am the only one again who is speaking out.

To my highly knowledgeable colleagues in drugs or alternative areas, especially herbs, why are you so silent, even now? We don’t have that much time anymore. By now, as highly knowledgeable scientists, you must already have some inkling that our drug endeavors haven’t worked for our health.  We definitely can’t waste anther 50 or 80 more years doing the same failed research. If you have your own ideas that are better than mine on this VC, please let’s hear about them. I am sure you don’t want your children and grandchildren to inherit this vicious cycle in only a few decades, unless you happen to be part owners of the VC. Please support me and buy my book if you love your children and grandchildren, or humanity and our environment. My book, “My Life & Rollercoaster Career” is available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble; and my article “A Disruptive Concept in Drug Therapy” is on LinkedIn and my blog: www.ayslcorp.com/blog

I wish you all good health and, ideally, optimal natural health without drugs!

Bypassing the Vicious Cycle! Part 1 How it emerged and established itself as a major part of our healthcare and how we can avoid and bypass it…

In my last 2 short posts, I have briefly explained the misapplication of scientific technologies to traditional medicines and that its failure to properly evaluate the true value of these tried-and-true therapies has landed us in the vicious cycle (VC), with apparently no viable natural alternatives. The reason is that, due to this misapplication of technologies, traditional medicines, such the Chinese herbs or Indian medicines, have never been properly evaluated and subsequently modernized the right way to still retain their age-old traditional attributes, hence their well-known and documented values. Instead, what we currently have is not traditional herbal medicines, but chemicals arbitrarily selected to represent them. These chemicals can simply be isolated and, if feasible, promptly synthesized.  Being made from petrochemicals, containing also such brand-new, totally unknown ones as impurities, they will fit right into our VC. I was trained in Big Pharma’s chemical-oriented technologies and have used them for decades. Even now, at times, if I am not thinking totally straight, these technologies still take over my mind. Thus, toxic chemical drugs have so occupied my thinking along with the apparent ruination (or at best, tossing-aside) of Chinese medicine that I almost did not realize there is another way to deal with the VC. That was after months of being active on LinkedIn, having connected with a whole new movement heading towards alternative healthcare; I changed my mind.

From a few dozen connections several months ago to now, close to 3,500. Many of my colleagues are drug experts and over half are alternative-oriented, and practicing non-drug therapies. With genuine herbal supplements and natural chemicals from nature (not synthesized from brand-new toxins), we can build an alternative path based on mostly Chinese tonic herbs and formulas that have doubled safely as both food and medicine for millennia. Some of which are already being used as herbal supplements, though much confusion still exists in this field. I am going to try to change that, hopefully with your support.

If this is the first time you hear or read about the VC, please first read my paper, “A Disruptive Concept in Drug Therapy” or my new book, “My Life & Rollercoaster Career,” at least its Introduction, to get an overall picture of what modern drug therapy and traditional medicines actually are. The VC is described there many times.

This VC is now firmly established in our life and occupies a key part of our healthcare, whether we like it or not. However, one thing I really don’t like and have been trying in recent years to figure out, is how this totally one-sided scenario could have emerged. I still have not found the answer. Yet, the drug makers have finally arrived at this VC, by chance, or by design. Since all synthetic drugs have toxic effects at their recommended dose levels (not just megadose) and can cause new diseases that are, in turn, treated with more new drugs, hence the VC. It goes on one after another. The pharmaceutical industry and its associates control this VC. No need to make drugs that work, or safe. Just safe enough not to kill test animals too soon. Our modern drug scientists (discoverers & developers) call this ‘evidence-based’ medicine, while they refer to traditional medicines non-scientific and anecdotal, no matter how long the tradition or how well documented, intimating that our ancestors were ignorant. The simple truth is, neither modern drug therapy nor traditional tried-and-true medicine is scientific, as explained earlier in my previous posts here or on my blog (www.ayslcorp.com/blog).

We are now at a point that our conventional scientific endeavors are moving too fast, often tainted or corrupted by money. It seems every scientific undertaking related to health and sickness is incentivized by the amount of profit one can make. To maximize profit we have patents to prevent others from doing the same thing so that, depending on our conscience, we can demand any price, and no one can do anything about it. I’m sure many patents are legitimate, especially those with easily measurable outcome. However, with synthetic drugs or complex herbs for disease treatment, the uncontrollable nature of the elements of time and our extremely complex and well-organized body, are in their way. A patented synthetic drug does not guarantee it would work decades after it has been approved and is in human use. How do you judge the performance of these medicines and grant them patents? What if it causes cancer or some new diseases (or increases the incidences of old ones) 5 years, or even 25, after approval? What happens then? The drug maker would return our money?  I know I am not supposed to ask so many questions to upset the status quo. But I can’t help it.

With so many scientific advancements, each of us digging deeper and deeper into our own hole (specialty), say, on a hill, with no idea how they would affect the hill (our health), nor do we even care, just doing research for the sake of research? I assume the hill would eventually collapse and all that digging was for naught, at least as far as the hill is concerned. I think this is similar to our current life-science research efforts. Some of our research has produced great results, many of which find specific invaluable applications in our daily lives. But how can they help our health? I don’t think we know, because most of us are free thinkers with a free will, though some of us might have been brainwashed by Big Pharma at a young age and then dragged into the VC, not knowingly. I was one such scientist for decades. But fate has led me through a rollercoaster career and eventually ended up where I am – an entrepreneurial herbal scientist, not just a chemist or herbalist, but a scientist with insight into these fields.  I can see the benefits of our herbal tradition, not just seeking out any particular chemical in the herbs we like or in which we have the expertise to turn the chemical into a modern drug, eventually synthesized. There doesn’t seem to be any concerted effort to set a defined goal to benefit the health of the general public.  However, I do have some ideas and plans.

Regardless, what is health anyway? We are now firmly established in this VC era. We live by some average numbers based on statistics, without taking into consideration an individual’s own constitution. If we are within the normal range, we are deemed healthy. Otherwise, the medical and pharmaceutical establishments will prescribe drugs to bring your numbers back to normal.

There are various criteria for good health or optimal health. Some people have taken drugs from an early age and have always taken them for one thing or another. These people with all these drug molecules inside their bodies may feel ‘fine’ in general, but they are prone to aches and pains that can be alleviated by more drugs, some brand new. Then, when they become seniors, half of them take over half-a-dozen prescription drugs daily. They may survive to 70 or 80. But is this a truly healthy life compared to the one lived by many who seldom, if ever, take drugs, legal or illegal?

I like to tell people about the Chinese dish chop suey when comparing good health (or just surviving) to optimal or great health. Among the Cantonese people, legend has it that chop suey started during the Gold-Rush era (ca 1849), when many young men, mostly from my mother’s village, Sun Wui (Xinhui) and nearby ones, especially Toy San (Taishan) (Mandarin spelling in italics) went to San Francisco, or “Gold Mountain,” to seek fame and fortune. They mostly ended up in the food and laundry, or other service businesses. Being frugal, they didn’t throw away the leftovers but saved them, mixed them up and stir-fried them the next day with maybe some fresh beansprouts and called it chop suey (meaning “mixed bits & pieces”) to serve to their customers. For my millennial and younger colleagues and friends, you have grown up in the more recent era when communication with Asia and other faraway countries is already instant or only minutes away. I bet you have never tasted chop suey, because most Chinese restaurants don’t serve it anymore. However, back in the 1950’s and 1960’s, it was a popular dish in Chinese restaurants for non-Chinese Americans. That represented ‘Chinese food’ to them up until probably 1980’s or 1990’s when you could get practically any Chinese food close to those served in Hong Kong. So, if you only knew chop suey as Chinese food and liked it, you hadn’t tasted real Chinese food. The difference between them was like night and day. That’s why I like to give this as an example to describe our health in America. Many people with all these drug molecules in their body may think they are healthy because they can easily get hold of drugs to treat their ups or downs to return to their drug-maintained normal. However, they have probably never known true health without drugs. Mine belongs to the latter, truth health without drugs. I want to help introduce this to our younger generations by bypassing the VC.

Our body is naturally resilient. If we take good care of it through good nutrition, regular exercise, and avoid stress and drugs, it has self-healing powers that allow it to right itself from an occasional abuse, whatever it is.

With such a body system, we can be naturally healthy without synthetic drugs in our alternative path parallel to that of the VC. More than half of my connections are practicing in such areas as nutrition, lifestyles, natural therapies, herbs, acupuncture, moxibustion, qigong, tuina massage, gong fu, energy healing, etc.), true prevention (not what is practiced by the medical or pharmaceutical professions where prevention simply means detecting a disease early and treating it with more toxic drugs), and many others. This has probably been ongoing for some years while I was busy winding down my business after losing two of my major products to another company that persuaded the younger generation of my client to switch to cheaper versions without much genuine extracts in them [see “Chapter 9: Adulteration Continues to be a Major Problem” of my newest book, “My Life & Rollercoaster Career.”].

What are the sciences of medicines?

Depending on our ultimate intention, there are 2 issues involved in the therapeutic process.

First, for the straight-forward synthetic chemical we call modern drug, its design and preparation are scientific; but once it enters our complex body, the process is simply trial and error, no different from how our distant ancestors first tasted plants to distinguish the edible ones from the toxic ones; then passed them on to us.

Second, while traditional medicines have been effectively used for millennia in keeping us alive and well, they are no longer truly traditional in recent decades.  It seems no one has been interested in preserving them, while Big Pharma with its financial clout, is only interested in obtaining more chemical drugs from them, thus skewing everything to only chemical drugs.  It has even somehow persuaded scientists in China to go along.  Hence, I’m sad to say, no more traditional Chinese medicines as they have been known, used, and documented!  Unless…

Scientific research on herbs for use in human therapy has never worked as intended

I have repeatedly explained this in my earlier posts in LinkedIn and on my blog, especially in my most recent book and paper.  The following 2 posts (Spanish & English) carry the same message that will lead you to my next article.  I hope that will come out in no more than a few days.  You see, I have this handicap since childhood.  The message from brain to paper/keyboard is v…e…r…y slow.  At times, when inspiration strikes, I may have a chain of brilliant ideas.  Then, by the time I barely finish writing down the first one, I’d lose all the rest.  All my life, I can’t take notes either, just a word here and there.  After I founded my own companies and had competent assistants, I couldn’t dictate so I just told them in a short conversation of what I had in mind, and they would have the key points for me to work on and to finish.  Now, I am on my own.  So, please excuse my slow speed.  #scientificresearch #handicap #brain #childhood #message #keyboard #owncompanies #assistants #slowspeed

My Life & Rollercoaster Career (p. 68-69).  ¡Gracias!

My friends and colleagues, please excuse my Spanish

I’ve never published anything in this language except on LinkedIn and on my blog. I taught myself Spanish when I was about 15 years old using the book “Teach Yourself Spanish”.  Then, at the university in Taiwan, I met the Jesuit priest from Spain, Father Marcelino Andreu, who became my mentor.  I was able to talk with him and he corrected my writings during my college years.  The Spanish language I have learned was that of the 1950s. I hope you don’t find it too strange, although I’ve been reading El País and BBC World in recent years.  Please read what I have written about P. Marcelino in my book “My Life & Rollercoaster Career” (p. 68-69). Thank you!

Our Amazing Body! It has its own mind!

We are all born with a well-functioning body primed for our survival.  There is everything on earth for us to stay alive and healthy.  Since humans appeared on this planet countless years ago, we have learned what to eat or avoid for our survival.  When we are ill, we have learned what to ingest to recover and stay alive. For generations since ancient times we have also developed a healthcare system that tells us what is beneficial to take and what is poisonous to avoid.  Because of this, we are still here today.  Our survival does not depend on unknown brand-new chemicals made from toxic petrol chemicals which may temporarily relieve our illness but eventually, when trying to make ‘better’ ones, we’d abuse the process, resulting in creating more problems and illnesses.  This has now ended up in a vicious cycle.  The greedy money-worshipers might not have meant it, or been greedy, at the onset.  But once this vicious cycle was established, they have succumbed to one of our human weaknesses and quietly let it be, knowing full well it is a one-way street downhill for others but themselves.  These businessmen seemed to have embraced evil; the more toxic drugs, the more money flowing their way.  To hell with the rest of us.  Why? Maybe they don’t have children and grandchildren or simply, compassion.  Or perhaps their religion or family value works counter to everyone else’s?  I wish someone with credibility and expertise in such matters would write something understandable to the general public and tell us how this could have happened.  First from ephedrine to morphine, and then to penicillin.  These are all natural chemicals in our environment, later replaced with ‘better’ ones, for whatever purpose – the synthetic amphetamines, opioids, and bacteria-resistant antibiotics. Now, they have all come back to haunt us. And yet we have these amazing scientific advances in every field, except knowing how to put these together to benefit the whole – our body (a mini cosmos) and our environment (a little cosmos).  We can put micro switches to cut off a disease at its molecular level or bigger switches to turn off bits and pieces of a disaster that is natural or already man-made.  For the sake of our grandchildren, theirs, and other future generations, we should now start not to allow any more synthetic chemicals to be used unless we can first find a safe way to dispose of them after using.  This would help our environment and our health.  Which is why I uploaded my post, “Let’s dream big!” (English & Spanish) earlier on my blog and LinkedIn.  For the sake of our future generations, especially you younger folks, we can start doing it for real because we have the technology (Phyto-True), the lab, and the experience.  All we need is a lot of you to buy my book and/or spread the word.  My blog:  www.ayslcorp.com/blog           #healthcare, #petrolchemicals #viciouscycle #evil #toxicdrugs #ephedrine #morphine #antibiotics #amphetamines #opioids #bacteriaresistant       #scientificadvances #environment #future #generations #disaster #survival
